From Chronic Pain and Stiffness to Strength, Mobility and Confidence: Karen’s Story

Karen came to me looking for a way to feel better in her body.

She was dealing with chronic neck, shoulder, and back tightness, alongside knee pain and poor balance. Even her osteopath had highlighted how much tension she was carrying.  She knew she’d reached perimenopause and everything was feeling harder than it used to.

Exercise felt daunting. She was nervous about using weights and often found herself struggling to complete even short training sessions.

Something needed to change, but she needed an approach that worked with her body, not against it.

The Challenge

Before working with me, Karen was constantly battling aches, stiffness, and discomfort.

Her neck, shoulders, and back felt tight most of the time. Knee pain affected her confidence, and balance issues made certain movements feel challenging.

Like many people experiencing chronic pain, she worried about making things worse. The idea of strength training felt intimidating, especially when she wasn’t sure which exercises would help and which might aggravate her symptoms.

On top of that, a busy lifestyle and lots of responsibilities aside from herself made consistency difficult.

Why She Nearly Didn’t Start

Karen wasn’t convinced that strength training was right for her.

She worried that weights might increase her pain rather than improve it. She also questioned whether she could fit regular exercise into an already packed schedule.

After years of stiffness and discomfort, it can be hard to imagine feeling any different.

The Turning Point

Rather than forcing Karen into a generic programme, every aspect of her training was adapted to suit her individual needs.

Exercises were modified around her specific pain points.

She had back-up options for every exercise.

Squats were adjusted to improve comfort and confidence.

Foam rolling and spiky ball release work were introduced to help reduce tension and improve mobility.

Just as importantly, her programme was designed to fit around her lifestyle rather than expecting her life to revolve around exercise.

That flexibility gave Karen something she’d struggled to achieve before: consistency.

The Results

Over the following months, Karen achieved:

  • ✅ Noticeably reduced back tightness, confirmed by her osteopath
  • ✅ Improved knee pain and day-to-day comfort
  • ✅ Better balance and movement confidence
  • ✅ Progressed her strength and increased the weights she was lifting
  • ✅ Consistently completed at least 3 training sessions every week for 12 months (and counting)
  • ✅ Developed confidence and independence with her workouts

One of the biggest signs of progress?

She no longer needs to watch every exercise video to remember what to do.

What once felt unfamiliar and intimidating has now become part of her routine.

In her own words…

“I feel stronger, more mobile, and much more confident. The aches and tightness have improved, I’m lifting heavier weights, and exercise finally feels like something I can stick with.”

What This Means for You

If you’re living with aches, stiffness, joint pain, or mobility issues, it doesn’t mean exercise is off limits.

In many cases, the right programme can help you move better, feel stronger, and regain confidence in your body.

Karen’s journey shows that progress isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about finding an approach that works for your body, your schedule, and your goals.

Small, consistent actions can create significant changes over time.
